The Welsh Grand National, run at Chepstow around the turn of the year, is one of the great staying handicap chases — a marathon test of nearly three and three-quarter miles, almost always contested on deep, testing midwinter ground. It's a race for out-and-out stayers and has been a springboard to the Aintree National for several horses.
The combination of extreme distance and heavy ground makes stamina the overwhelming requirement here; class matters, but a horse that truly gets the trip on soft ground, jumps safely and stays galloping to the line is the profile. Proven form in staying chases on testing going is the key pointer.
