St Leger
The world's oldest Classic — a stiff staying test at Doncaster that closes the Classic season.
The St Leger, staged at Doncaster in September, is the oldest of the five British Classics and the final one of the season — a mile-and-three-quarter test for three-year-olds that crowns the year's best stayer. It's the third leg of the Triple Crown, a feat now rarely attempted given the modern emphasis on speed and middle-distance breeding.
Doncaster's Town Moor is a fair, galloping, left-handed track with a long run-in, so the emphasis is squarely on stamina — the Leger sorts out the genuine stayers from the speed horses that got away with middle distances earlier in the year. Proven form over a mile and a half or further, and a strong staying pedigree, are the key pointers.
