Scottish Grand National
Ayr's marathon spring chase — the northern leg of the National series.
The Scottish Grand National at Ayr in April is the northern counterpart to Aintree and Chepstow's marathons — a staying handicap chase of around four miles run late in the jumps season. It rounds off the big spring staying-chase programme and often falls just after the Aintree National, sometimes attracting horses that ran there.
Ayr is a flat, fair, left-handed galloping track, so while stamina is essential over the trip, the level nature means a slightly slicker, faster type can go well compared with a stiffer marathon course. Genuine staying-chase form and the ability to carry weight are the standard guides.
