The King George VI Chase, run at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, is the mid-season highlight of the staying-chase division and, after the Gold Cup, the most prestigious three-mile chase in the calendar. It's a Christmas institution and often the race that shapes the market for Cheltenham in March.
Kempton is a sharp, flat, right-handed track — the opposite of Cheltenham's stamina-sapping climb — so it favours a slick-jumping, front-running or prominent chaser with a good cruising speed, rather than a pure stamina grinder. Horses that jump fluently and can lie handy round the tight bends are advantaged; the flat nature means class and speed tell more than raw stamina.
