What an honest horse racing tips service actually looks like

22 July 2026 · 6 min read

The horse racing tips industry has an honesty problem, and most punters have felt it. A service posts a run of winners, you sign up, and somehow your results never match the screenshots. The uncomfortable truth is that in a market where records are hard to verify, the loudest and least honest operators tend to win the sale. So what does a genuinely honest tips service actually look like? Here are the things worth insisting on.

1. Every tip is registered before the off

This is the single most important test. Anyone can point at a winner after the race. The only meaningful proof is that a selection and its price existed before the result was known, timestamped and locked. If a service can't show you that, its record is a story, not evidence. It's why we register every tip before the off and never edit or delete one afterwards.

2. Losers stay on the record

An honest record shows the bad days next to the good. If you only ever see winners, they're being curated — and a curated record tells you nothing about what to expect. Losing runs are normal even for a strong process (more on that in variance and losing runs). A service that hides them is hiding the thing you most need to see.

3. The headline metric can't be faked

Strike rate is the tipster's favourite number precisely because it's easy to inflate — a high strike rate at short prices can still lose money. The number that can't be faked is closing line value (CLV): did the price you were given beat the market's closing price? It can only be computed from a price logged ahead of time and compared to a public close, which makes it very hard to fudge — and it's the leading indicator of whether a process has any edge at all.

4. No promises of guaranteed profit

Betting markets are broadly efficient, and no honest operator can promise you'll win. Anyone who does is either naive or lying. What an honest service can offer is a disciplined, data-driven read of the card, full transparency about how it's done, and the tools to bet sensibly — while being clear that your return depends on your own stakes and the prices you take.

5. It cares whether you bet healthily

The anti-tipster move is caring about your wellbeing over your deposits: clear 18+ and responsible gambling messaging, and never leaning on hype or FOMO to sell. It's a small signal that tells you a lot about who you're dealing with.

The questions to ask before you pay

Are tips timestamped before the off? Are losers shown? Is the headline metric CLV or just strike rate? Can you verify the record independently? Does the marketing promise profit? Run any service through those five questions and the honest ones separate quickly from the rest.

That standard is exactly what we hold ourselves to — you can see our live record on the proofing page, warts and all. And if you're weighing up whether a service is worth paying for at all, we wrote an honest take on whether tipsters are worth it.
