Newmarket course guide
Newmarket is the headquarters of British flat racing, with two tracks — the Rowley Mile and the July Course. Both feature long, wide, galloping straights and a stiff finish (the Rowley Mile's climb, the 'Dip' and rise, is famous), so they reward class, stamina and a horse that stays the trip strongly. These are proper championship tests rather than tricky, tactical courses.
Draw and pace can matter in the big straight-course handicaps — fields often divide into groups and the favoured side shifts with the ground, so the early races are a useful guide on the day. Newmarket stages Classic trials and two of the season's five Classics (1,000 and 2,000 Guineas), so the form is elite and progressive three-year-olds are worth respecting.
